So, you want to get first classes, distinctions and honors in 2009. If this is so, then you are talking to the right person. My name is Solomon. The Bible affirms that I was “wiser than all men/women” (I Kings 4:31). I could compose songs, utter proverbs and lecture on almost anything. Now I want to tell you the secret of becoming as brilliant as I was.
Wise people are not born but made. And the interesting thing is that there is a GOD who is ready to make you brilliant. This GOD one day appeared to me and offered me a blank cheque: “Ask me for anything, and I will give it to you” (II Chronicles 1:7)! Contrary to the views of the material world, I asked for wisdom and understanding. Little did I know that if you have wisdom you have all - GOD indeed gave me more than a brilliant mind!
So, the secret of becoming successful is to ask GOD for wisdom and understanding. I hope someone out there would experience this and be able to proclaim that “if any one of you lack wisdom let him/her ask God, that giveth to all men/women liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given unto him/her” (James 1:5).
I can see you getting excited, ready to ask GOD for wisdom. That’s good but I’ll be unfair to you if I don’t warn you that there are some conditions. Experience has taught me that GOD gives us wisdom so that we can be of help to our fellow humans. If we use it selfishly then this wisdom becomes a curse instead of a blessing.
If you don’t believe me, let me share with you what happened to me: In the beginning I was very selfless and used my wisdom to judge fairly my people. I hope you have heard that story of how I judged wisely between two sorrowing mothers (I Kings 3:1-28). Sad to say later on selfishness took hold of me and I started to rely on myself and not on GOD, “the giver of every perfect gift” (James 1:17”! My life became centered in the letter, “I”: “I made me great works; I builded me house; I planted me vineyard; I….” (Ecclesiastes 2:4-8) No wonder at the center of the word SIN is the letter ‘I’!
All this happened because I forgot these last words of my father David, “He that ruleth over men/women must be just, ruling in the fear of GOD” (II Samuel 23:3). My dear readers if you really want to be wise then remember that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 9:10; 1:7). And “the fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way” (Proverbs 8:13). No wonder my father David sung: “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple” (Psalms 19:7).
I have to go now and finish the last page of my autobiography. This is what I’ll write there as my closing words: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear GOD, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For GOD shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). Goodbye dear readers. Solomon, the wise man who became foolish, encourages you to find wisdom because Jesus, Wisdom Personified declares “whoso findeth me findeth life” (Proverbs 8:35 cf. John 14:6)
Happy New Year!
